In response to the HS metaphor going around just now, I went and read this post and laughed myself silly.

My big problem is....where am I supposed to sit, exactly?

A few people have suggested I should go sit with the SteamPunk kids, due to the time period in which I set a lot of my work, but really! I don't have a black leather corset...and if I did, I wouldn't wear it to school. I'll never fit in! Hmmmph!

Perhaps over with the history geeks? Novik might be nice to talk to...
The romance table? Bujold and Asaro are pretty cool, though, and probably don't want to talk to an associate HS student like me....

Where did Martha Wells go sit? Caroline Stevermer? They're nice. Anyone seen Teresa Edgerton? Susan Dexter? Are they at school here?

::still wandering around::

About six months before it came out, I attended a reading, and the scene he read from was *not* in the book, so it must be in the mythical second half.

And I really didn't feel he'd "told all of" any of the characters' stories, since at least Arya and Sansa were left hanging. I don't object to characters not getting to live happily ever after, but I like a sentence or two to tell me we're actually done with their story. So yes, I laughed at he GRRM comment.

I am glad someone else out there felt kind of like I did. I think you have to love Arya, but she was only in six parts I think, and although Sansa is a family member, does anyone really care that much about her? He really picked poorly when giving us characters to read. If you don't have Dani or John in the book, then it isn't Fire and Ice, period.

I agee. I care for Arya, but many of his characters, I could live without. Sansa's main problem is that we keep waiting for her to get mad and take control of her stiuation -- or at least attempt to -- she hasn't done a blessed thing yet. And his apparent excuse that she's a sheltered little girl doesn't work, since he repeatedly says all the Starks we raused to be a bit tough. And he seems to have completely forgotten about the littlest Stark (Was his name Roddy? After two whole books without him, I can't remember.)

And franky, the only adult characters I care about are Tyrion (though I do wish at least he Starks would realize he's on their side -- or wanted to be) Baelish and Littlefinger. (Or are they the same person? It's been so long...)

Perhaps he should have toned down the gore and incest and written it as YA?
