After some consideration, I am trunking "The Family Business".

Yes, I sold it to the first venue it went to...which then subsequently evaporated....sublimated...whatever they do. However, I'd have to agree with [livejournal.com profile] displaced_texan that it really just isn't my style. So it goes into the trunk after one submission! ::slams lid and sits on trunk::

I did think about removing one of the two other trunk stories, "Ghost." (The one that an admired gentleman in Kansas said was 'publishable as is', but the four editors I sent it to didn't think so.) I'm going to keep it in there for now, because like TFB, I just don't think it's me either.

On a sunny note: We are going to go to the gym today...the first time out of the house since Friday morning's post. I just hope we can get the car back into the garage! (Steep driveway)

I'm really curious about this...

If you wrote it, doesn't that by default make it your style? Maybe it isn't a tone or voice you use too often but it is inside of you.

I often think about this particular issue because 'some' of my writing is so stylistically mine that it is easy to identify - while other writing shocks people when they find out its mine. At one point I tried (failed) to corral my style along the lines of what I thought was what I wanted to write like.

Should our style orphans remain orphans?

I just don't know...perhaps when we're famous, someone will want them, but when I have so little out there, I'm not certain that this is a piece that I want people to think is representative of my work....that's the logic, at least.

I told my husband I would only send it to smaller venues, and he said...then why send it out at all?

It's a big trunk. with plenty of room. They're OK in there for now. I haven't forgotten them, I just don't want to bother to re-write them.

I do understand trunking stuff - even though I have very very little in my trunk. I made more of the reverse decision to throw everything at the wall and to try to keep my judgmental inner self (inner critic) quiet. I also am of the belief that everything will sell if sent out enough, unless it is real cow fodder - then it will sell immediately.

Yes, but I want to stay on my first reader's good side....
