Walking the Labyrinth
Sep. 16th, 2008 05:15 pmI went to visit a friend at Mercy Hospital today, and rediscovered the Prayer Labyrinth they have there. Dude!

When I left the hospital, I decided to go ahead and walk the labyrinth. I felt a weird sort of glee in doing it, and immediately started thinking of Zelazny and imagining power gathering around me. (Honestly, do any of us walk a labyrinth and not think of the Pattern?)
I confess to stepping ever-so-slightly over the line in one place, but I walked along and along, following the pattern. Thoughts of Zelazny faded, and I got to thinking about the structure itself. You really can't predict where the labyrinth is going next when you're walking it unless you've walked it several times before. In a way, that's relinquishing control to the pattern. It was an interesting thought.
As I came near the end, I realized I hadn't brought a stone or anything to leave in the center. I saw a wad of chewing gum that I could pick up and leave there, but that seemed....gross. Then (as I'm still walking along) I recalled that a few days ago I'd found 51 cents in the parking lot at B&N and picked it up. So, I got to the center, dug change out of my pocket, and left 51 cents there for.....whomever.
And despite having a semi-harried day, I really did feel better.
I did not, however, manager to transfer myself to some other place in the universe, or even just out to my car in the parking lot. I had to do that by foot.
