What do you think, people?
Aug. 5th, 2006 10:59 amA friend has advised me not to send my novels out to lurk in slush piles because once they accrue a few rejections, he says an agent won't represent them. I wonder if that's correct.
It seems like a Catch-22 situation. You have to sell something before you can get an agent but you can't get into certain publishing houses without one. Personaly, I figure agents are used to seeing rejections....
OK, so
pabba informs us he's up to his hundredth rejection, (you go, boy!) and I actually don't know where I am, so, let's see....
Novels
KD....still at first stop (since December '05)
DD....2 rejections, after sitting 10 months at one place, now at third stop (just arrived)
Shorts
Stains...1 rejection, then sold
Touching...2 rejections, sitting at publisher for unknown time period
Demons....1 rejection, at 2nd publisher now
Marriage....1 rejection, awaiting re-write
Wolf.....awaiting re-write
Twilight Time.....need to finish
(I don't actually like either of these stories--I'm just not enthusiastic enough about either of them to send them out any more.)
Familiarity....4 rejections, now trunked
Ghost....4 rejections, now trunked
Counting my 4 agent refusals, that puts me at 17 rejections....whoa! That's really low!
Oh wait, I did send a story out and got a refusal for it about 4 years ago (I knew they would refuse it because it was 77 pages--way too long, but I was trying to see how the process worked). 18 total. Got a long way to go to catch up!
Reading Shimmer now and hope to get my Fantasy Magazines from Clarkesworld soon so I can start reading those to get a feel for them. Will pick up the next two Black Gates as soon as they come out. Haven't read Interzone yet.
This is my history....pretty short, huh?
(Melissa, I'll bet you're embarrassed to know me now, aren't you?)
