Has anyone given thought to having their formalwear shipped to Malibu (rather than crammed into a suitcase). Do people do that? (I ship stuff back from functions all the time, but I've never tried shipping to a hotel).

ETA: I actually intended to post this to the WOTF XXIV community, but I guess I'll leave it here.

I've done it, and will probably ship my dress to WorldCon. Just call the hotel to see how they want it labeled.

Cool, I'm glad to know it works. Did you insure anything. That's my big concern....losing a rather costly tux and corset....

As I recall, I did. It was my wedding dress and I think I shipped it FedEx ground.

I've thought about it. (Also, giving it to Paul who is driving down...but he's scared to death he'll forget it.) I'll have it cleaned, take it with me, and then have it re-cleaned when we get there, the hotel has a valet dry cleaning service.

I don't trust the airlines... ;( and shipping would get it insured. So I might go that route. Still weighing options.

I had never done that, but it's a good idea. I guess, because what if it doesn't get there on time?

A small steam iron might be safer, and most hotels have service or provide the iron.

My actual concern is not the pressing. It's the fact that if the airlins looses a bag with several hundred dollars of formal wwear in it, we'll probably only get reimbursed 200 for the bag. If it's shipped, the box can be insured for its value...
(The tux with its accessories (studs, tie, cufflinks) runs about 600, and the corset about 200. We'd lose a bunch of money.)

You're right. How can I forget that airlines lose luggage. Hm.

My wife brought her wedding dress Carry-on in a special bag designed for the dress (so it wouldn't get too wrinkled). Probably the best bet if you're concerned about the package arriving. I guess Fed-Exing it would be very safe too, but would probably cost a few pro-sales worth of money. ;-)

Have a great trip!

Yeah, but I don't think that we can carry all that stuff on. Not with the new luggage restrictions....

Not sure. That was last October. Things have changed quite a bit recently. Often depends on the airline, too. Maybe you could give them a call to see. Often they're less stict with the carry-on then the check-in luggage. But that would be really bad if they refused you.

And we still don't know what carrier....

With excess baggage fees, and weight restrictions, people are schlepping way too much in carry-on and taking up bin space faster than ever. I'm hoping that Fed-exing won't really cost more than the second bag fee!

We've had good luck with shipping so far....

I dunno how much it'll cost, but I imagine it would cost quite a bit. Good luck!

I do tons of shipping, and it's often surprisingly inexpensive.
