Movies...

We rented (a rare thing) a couple of movies this week-end...Casino Royale and Eragon

Let's See:
Casino Royale Despite having a plot hole through which I could drive a 1964 Astin-Martin, it was a great Bond movie. (Won't mention it due to potential spoilerage) I certainly have to agree that Daniel Craig makes a very good Bond. If you go into it expecting a Bond movie (with all that entails) you will get exactly what you want.

Eragon Uh, I went into this with low expectations...

Cool, I might have to check out Casino Royale. I like Bond movies. Just enough action and suspense for me.

I'm trying to follow that whole "if you can't say..." adage.

I know someone who liked the book. He keeps looking hopefully at the movie (now the DVD). I keep telling him -- everyone I know who went in with low expectations has come out grumbling. Even people who expected a *bad* movie, came out unhappy. Don't go. If you liked the book, go reread the book.

I have not read the book, but I'm afraid the movie pretty much guarantees that I won't...

Heh. I suspect that there's no real need for you to. I think the best audience for the book is the generation that hasn't read all the many similar books of the genre. My friend (and I, also) heard audio version. It's a fine adventure, and a good narrator makes a big difference, but it's best for someone who "hasn't been there before," if you know what I mean.

Personally, I'm all for any book that brings in a whole raft of new readers, so I'm pretty happy with Eragon's (the book's) success!

Movies

I love movies, so I enjoyed both Eragon and Bond. The scene where James comes out of the ocean in his skimpy swimsuit reminds me of the Haley Berry scene a few Bonds ago. I tried to read Eragon, but it was a little simplistic for me. I put it down and didn't pick it back up. The effects in the movie were pretty good--they couldn't have done it a few years ago, but the storyline was a bit trite. The theater was packed when I saw it at the movies (lots of cell phones going off and commentary from the audience, though). I'm getting to the point that I don't like going to movie theaters because of the inconsiderate people who always seem to sit right behind me.

One of the reasons we go to very few movies. We usually go to the Kickingbird Theatres, which are generally not too crowded and have fewer cell phones.

I don't usually even think about Kickingbird although its a lot closer than AMC. I go to Cinemark sometimes to avoid the walk through the mall to get to the theater, but I don't go at night. I love stadium seating since someone 6'5" tall always seems drawn to the seat right in front of me. I have issues with movie theaters, as you can tell.
