I received a copy of the DVD "The Lighthorsemen" as a gift. Fantastic, since it contains many deleted scenes which don't appear on the VHS version. (Or the Aus release was just different.)

However I do wonder about the strict legality of the DVD since it was produced in Hong Kong (this is an Australian Movie which hasn't been released in the US on DVD). The English subtitles (for the deaf, I assume) were execrable. I am not using that term lightly.

For example: "No more good tucker" was translated as "I am a wood cutter". I suspect that there might have been machine transcription going on. There were parts where the subtitles held true for a minute or two and then slid back down into complete inanity. We laughed our heads off.

On another translation matter....can mastodonte have the same colloquial meaning in French that mammoth sometimes does in English? Such as "They had a mammoth garage sale." (I suspect [livejournal.com profile] aliettedb might be able to answer that.) I'm reading something in French where I believe the two words might have been interposed, resulting in a dirigible changing into a slowly floating mastodon....help!!

P.S. I didn't find turnips inspiring at any point during the week-end.
