An auction on Ebay-Belgium closed today at 70 Euros for a copy of Ansen Dibell's Aux confins de l'ouragan (Tidestorm Limit). That's the lowest I've seen one go for a long time. (There's one currently available on Priceminster-France for 135 Euros. Eep!) I still couldn't bring myself to bid on it.

I do want the book eventually. There were only 1530 copies ever printed (in French), so I know I'm going to have to pay--but not that much, not today.

I've also run across it listed in Creative Commons, which I'll have to check out.

I've read book 5 in the series (The Sun of the Grand Return, or Le soleil du grand retour), so I have a pretty good idea what happens in book 4, but there are tidbits that I want to know....like what happened to Garin and Sua. Oh, well....

Perhaps next year.

Every little bit helps. ;o)

Thanks to everyone who came by and patted me on the head the other day. I'm in a far better mood now, and am trying to consider the whole thing as a learning experience. Still, it's nice to know you have friends who care. ;o) The stages of being a writer are currently posted over on [livejournal.com profile] nancyfulda's blog, which reveals it as a rollercoaster existence. I had just hit the bottom of one of the hills Friday, so now I'm grinding my way back up.

Hmmm...the con. I got to meet some really nice people at the con, and got to meet some in the flesh that I usually only know virtually. Learned beaucoups about pod-casting. I got about 2K written, but fully knowing that it might be dropped out of the story I'm on once I get teh outline finalized.

I'm not a big partier, don't drink, and I am a believer in good sleep hygeine. Therefore, I'm the person who leaves the con parties at 10:30, goes back to the room, and sticks my fingers in my ears in order to get some sleep. Not too surprisingly, I didn't see any of the con people in the Fitness Room at 6:15. Actually, I was alone there. I'm weird.

I read a great deal in the down-periods, and have gotten about 3/4 of the way through that Dibell book. I decided that if I just read without trying to understand every word, then I can get about 95% through context. The downside of this is that the whole purpose of reading in French is to expand my vocabulary, and this method doesn't really help with that. Therefore, I think that once I've finished the book, I'll go back and do the slow word-by-word reading with FE dictionary in hand.

The last two days we've been experiencing rolling black-outs. No, not from overuse of the systems, but from a computer glitch at the substation. All told, we were probably down 3-4 hours yesterday. On, off, on, off, on, off...you get the idea. We seem to have gotten fixed by 8pm so I could watch Mystery on PBS. Thankfully. There would have been blood otherwise.

Spent the down-time reading The Sun of the Grand Return by Ansen Dibell instead.
spoilers under the cut... )

And that's where I am. I'll post the next quarter whenever I get through it. So far, it looks like this one has firmly slid from Science Fantasy into Science Fiction. You put a space ship into it, and suddenly the genre designation changes.
